Dr Richard Smith
Richard qualified from the University of Southampton, undertook specialist training in Wales and responded in South Wales with the local BASICS scheme during this time.Β He has also worked for the Greater Sydney Area HEMS in Australia featuring in the first series of BBC documentary Helicopter Heroes Down Under.Β He now works as a Consultant Trauma Resuscitation Anaesthetist at the Royal Stoke University Hospital and is also a regular HEMS doctor on HELIMED54 & HELIMED72. Richard also works as a MERIT Doctor for the North West Ambulance Service. He is an Instructor on both the European Trauma Course and the European Paediatric Advanced Life Support courses.

How long have you been responding as a volunteer for?
I joined MEDSERVE Wales in 2007 and became an active responder in 2011. I’ve been responding since 2016 for CSI BASICS. I also fly on the Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance (Helimed 54) and the Midlands Air Ambulance
What motivates you to volunteer?
Ability to enhance patient care at the incident scene, and support ambulance colleagues.
